This Sunday, October 21st, is the 22nd Sunday after Pentecost and Fill the Food Barrel Sunday. It is also Children’s Sabbath, a national multi-faith observance focusing prayers, worship, and activities on the needs of children and celebrating them in our lives. The Sunday School kids have hand-colored the bulletin covers and they will be singing at both services. After second service, there will be a Stewards of God’s Love Committee Meeting at 12:15 pm. All are welcome to attend.
Some great news: Diana and Collin Thormoto have had their baby, and everyone is doing fine. Lilith Aki Thormoto was born at 9:03 am on October 17. She is 6 lbs., 7.3 oz. and 20 inches long. Congratulations! Hope you weren’t too fond of sleep!
Next Sunday, October 28th, is Reformation Sunday. The tradition is to wear red (don’t ask me why) in celebration of Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses to the church door, getting the pope all grumpy, and starting the Reformation (maybe Luther accidently nailed his thumb and the red represents blood – who knows?).
The Sunday after that, November 4th, is All Saints Sunday. We honor the people who have been saints to you in your life by displaying their names and pictures during the service. Please write the names of your saints on the sheet at the Media Table (print legibly – we wouldn’t want to honor Martin Looter). If you submitted a photo last year and want us to re-use it, please indicate that on the sign-up sheet. Email new digital photos to Carmen at firstname.lastname@example.org. Printed photos can be put in Pastor Tim’s box for scanning. Please label prints with your name if you want them back.
Kathleen Keating is planning to hand out scripts for the Christmas Play at Sunday School on November 4th. For anyone who is unable to attend that day, she can send you a PDF of the script if you email her at email@example.com. She also would like to get an idea of how many would like to participate and who would like speaking roles, so she knows whether she needs to divide roles to accommodate all. If multiple kids want the same role, she will have them read for it (no memorization required), so it is important that all get a script ahead of time to familiarize themselves with the parts (bring boxing gloves for the more hotly contended roles). The play will be on December 16th with full rehearsals planned for the two Saturdays before. Music and dialogue will also be practiced during Sunday School on the previous weeks. Please let Kathleen know if your kids want to participate and to what extent.
Trunk-or-Treat is coming up soon on October 31st. Sign up at the Media Table if you would like to bring your decorated car (and treats to hand out). It’s a really fun event that involves the neighborhood as well. The more cars, the better! There are flyers available in the narthex for you to post and distribute wherever you can to ensure we have a nice big crowd of hungry ghouls!
In November, the Sunday School kids will be packing up shoeboxes full of items for Operation Christmas Child. The boxes will be distributed to needy children throughout the world. They are still looking for small items such as toys, books about Jesus, socks, and other items that kids would enjoy. Please place your items in the box in the Narthex by November 1st. For ideas about what and what not to contribute, please visit https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/what-goes-in-my-shoebox-suggestions/.
Don’t forget to sign up by November 1st for the Thrivent InFaith Community Event on November 4th at 12:15 pm. It’s about estate planning and what you can do to help grow HTLC’s endowment (which we could reeeally use!).
See you in church!
