This Sunday, March 3rd, is the 1st Sunday of Lent, and Scrip Sunday. Remember, if you donate scrip gift cards for the Spaghetti Feed, Holy Trinity gets a percentage of the value in addition to what we make by people buying raffle tickets (I mean people hopefully donating the suggested amount for raffle tickets)! This Sunday is also the first day of Daylight Savings Time, so be sure to set those clocks forward an hour Saturday night – you don’t want to miss a single scintillating moment of church!
Speaking of Lent, our focus this Lent as a church is on how to better take care of our world and its resources. In support of this, we are offering “Stewardship of Creation: A Thirty Day Discipline” as a resource. (I know what you’re thinking – why not 40 days? Just do the devotions on weekdays during Lent – you can ravage the planet on the weekends!) Each day features a scripture, facts, ideas for involvement, and a prayer all focusing on that day’s environmental topic. These devotions were created by Sara Olson and Brooke Petersen for the Web of Creation (www.webofcreation.org) at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. It is available to download as a PDF by clicking on the title above so you can read it on one of your devices instead of printing it out (save those trees!). You can also download it from our website www.holytrinityfremont.org under “Of Special Note.” For the less digitally-inclined (who probably aren’t reading this), we have printed a few copies which are available at the Media Table.
Don’t forget, we have our Midweek Lenten Services at 6:30 pm on Wednesdays throughout Lent excluding Holy Week. These are short meditative services featuring the “Voices of Lent” – dramatic readings from the perspective of people from the Bible. I highly recommend these services (and not just because I tend to be the one up front singing).
Other Local Lutheran Churches’ Lenten Opportunities: Christ the King is hosting a Book Study on The Last Week: A Day-by-Day Account of Jesus’s Final Week in Jerusalem (ISBN-13: 978-0060872601) and Holy Redeemer is holding an ELCA Hunger’s 40 Days of Giving Lenten Study on the 5 Tuesdays of Lent at IHOP in Newark at 6:30 pm. Please consider attending these events and meeting your fellow Lutherans.
The Spaghetti Feed is looming (only two weeks away!) on Saturday, March 23rd from 4 pm to 8 pm. Start getting those raffle baskets ready, buy your tickets (I mean please donate the suggested amounts for your tickets – sheesh!), and take some fliers from the Usher’s Table to distribute to anyone and anyplace you think might be remotely interested. It takes all of us to make this event a success!
We have 36 leaves on the Giving Tree! Great job everyone, and thank you. We need to be sure that we acknowledge each of the gifts, talents, and treasures that we all bring to our communities and HTLC to make them better places. Of course everyone else is still invited to turn in a form at any time. Please be assured that all ideas, thoughts, and suggestions will be discussed by either council or the appropriate committee. The feedback you are providing is valued. As promised, this is the first week of the Stewardship Spotlight! This week the spotlight is on Chris Wicke. Chris completed a stewardship form that highlights many gifts he shares in the HTLC community by helping with homeless bags, selecting gifts for the Angel Tree, participating in the pageant, and most importantly staying quiet during Sunday School. A gift many of us were never able to give our church.
See you in church!
