This Sunday, December 2nd, is the 1st Sunday of Advent and of the church year. It’s also Nacho Name Tag Sunday and Scrip Sunday. Yes, Scrip Sunday moves up a week in December so that everyone can get their gift cards in time for Christmas. You know you’re going to run out of time to shop later, so why not get it done now and help HTLC at the same time? See Pamela Metcalf if you’re unsure how this all works. There will be a Christmas Pageant Rehearsal at 10 am followed by short lessons/activities for Sunday School.
But wait, before all that happens: tomorrow, Saturday, December 1st, there are all sorts of things going on. Let’s take them chronologically, shall we? At 11 am to 3 pm in Holland Hall is the Holiday Boutique put on by Relay for Life and benefitting the American Cancer Society (I won a raffle prize there last year, but that in no way influenced me to give this plug [much]). Then, from 2 pm to 4 pm there will be a Christmas Pageant Rehearsal for the Sunday School kids. Family Advent Night starts at 4 pm with a carpool to Christ the King for dinner and crafts. Then at 6 pm there will be caroling at Carlton. At 7 pm is cookies, cocoa, and tree decorating here at HTLC. Feel free to come to any and all of these activities (or come and help decorate the sanctuary at 6 pm).
There will be an R&R Circle Meeting on Wednesday, December 5th, at 10 am in the Activity Room, followed by lunch (should we be warning local restaurants?).
Next Saturday, December 8th, at noon is the Angel Tea (yum!) at Laurel’s house benefitting the foster kids. There is also a full Christmas Pageant Rehearsal from 1 pm to 3 pm in the sanctuary. The Christmas Pageant will be on Sunday the 9th at 10 am between the two services. Don’t miss it!
All are invited to Lucille and Leon Klovdahl’s house (7874 Hazelnut Drive Newark, CA 94560) for a potluck and rollicking good time at the annual Daytimers’ Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 12th at 10:30 am. Please let them know if you are planning to attend.
Bryan MacFarlane will be visiting and feeding us all at 10 am between the services on December 16th for what we are calling Bryan’s Brunch. He is doing it in thanks for the congregation’s support through the years. Any freewill offerings will go to Adopt an Angel (in lieu of the An-Tea Party this year). Thanks, Bryan! (has anyone else noticed that every paragraph so far mentions food?)
Be sure to check out the cool new crèche from Neal and Rene Bierbaum on the Usher’s Table. It was made by an artist from the village of Mto Wa Mbu (literally “River of Mosquitos” – I kid you not!) in Tanzania. It joins other crèches they have given us in the past. Thanks, Neal and Rene!
Other events to look forward to in December: the Choir Sermon in Song on the 23rd, Christmas Eve Services at 5 pm and 9 pm on the 24th, and a single 10 am Carol Service on the 30th.
See you in church! (boy, are my two typing fingers tired!)
