HTLC News Email, Friday, January 31, 2020

Hi, Everybody:

By now, you may have heard of the passing of Steve Holland, son of Holy Trinity’s founding pastor Eugene Holland.  The memorial service for Steve Holland will take place on Saturday, Feb 22nd, at 1 pm with reception to follow, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 401 Grizzly Peak Blvd, Berkeley, CA 94708.  The obituary may be viewed online at https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sfgate/obituary.aspx?n=steven-holland&pid=195140946.  The family requests donations be made to either: Heart to Heart Global Cardiac Care https://www.heart-2-heart.org/ or The Berkeley Rotary Endowment Fund http://berkeleyrotary.org/donate-berkeley-rotary-endowment.php.

This Sunday, February 02, is the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany and Nacho Name Tag Sunday.  However, I’m assuming those nachos will be served at the Soup Potluck we are having at about 10 am between services in Holland Hall in honor of the Souper Bowl of Caring.  In case you hadn’t heard, it’s Super Bowl Sunday (I gather some local team is playing in it) and each year we join in the national effort to fill local food pantries that day.  So please bring some cash or non-perishable food (or both) to donate, come to worship service, and have an early lunch before going off to whatever form of revelry you have planned.

R&R Circle, that raucous group of church ladies, will be having their quarterly meeting at 10 am this Wednesday, February 5th in the Activity Room.  Fair warning.

Next Sunday, February 9, we are having a SINGLE SERVICE AT 10 AM before the ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING AT 11 AM (bold caps mean it’s important – I’m not yelling at you).  All members please show up, sign in so we have a quorum, grab something to eat, learn whats up at HTLC, vote for Church Council members, and enjoy a democratic process that’s a lot less rancorous than our national ones.  Copies of the 2019 and proposed 2020 budgets are available in the narthex for you to look over now so Terri MacFarlane (our hard-working volunteer Treasurer) can answer your questions before the meeting rather than being surprised by them during the meeting (unless you really enjoy watching her shuffle frantically through papers while the whole congregation waits – I usually take that time to grab more snacks).

By the way, thank you to those who have gotten me their information for the Annual Report.  Just a friendly reminder to those committee chairs and liaisons who haven’t given me their reports yet:  please get them in before Monday.  Of course, I’m all too happy to insert your reports at the last minute, reformat it all, and print it out the morning of the meeting – no trouble at all!  (that was the passive-aggressive reminder)

Mark your calendars:  the annual Spaghetti Feed fundraiser for HTLC will be on March 14 from 4 pm to 8 pm.  It’s not too early to start getting together prize baskets to be donated and raffled off, and to invite friends.  This year, snacks and appetizers start at 4 pm, with dinner being served from 4:45 pm to 7:30 pm.  There will be choices of pasta, including vegetarian and gluten-free options, salad, garlic bread, desserts, and beverages (beer & wine for extra donation).  Kids’ activities, games, raffles, and a silent auction are all part of the fun.  Prices will be $15 adults, $12 seniors, $10 kids, and  $45 for a family of four.  We will be able to accept credit cards and donations through Give+ as well as cash or checks.  Tickets and flyers will be available starting Sunday next week, barring unforeseen circumstances.  Just six more weeks to prepare!

See you in church!

-Keith
