Hi, Everybody:
This Sunday, February 14 is Transfiguration Sunday, Scrip Sunday, and Valentine’s Day (Tip: don’t give your sweetheart scrip for Valentine’s Day, lest they transfigure your face!). Zoom Communion is back at 9:45 a.m., so Coffee Chat moves back to 9:15 a.m. Confirmation Class resumes at 10 a.m.
Ash Wednesday is coming up this Wednesday, February 17 – the beginning of the season of Lent. We will have a live-by-Zoom worship service at 7 p.m. (Zoom info will be coming in a later email). “But how will we get ashes?” I hear you say. Well, I’m glad you asked because there will be two methods you can use for ashes. One will be to make your own ashes before the service by writing your burdens on a piece of paper and burning it in a bowl (fire-proof, please!). The other method is to come by church this Sunday morning between 8 and 11 and pick up a baggie of palm leaf ashes. In either case, you’ll want to add a few drops of oil to the ashes to make them properly smudgeable (any oil will do – well, maybe not motor oil – extra-virgin olive oil seems appropriate, somehow). Be sure to have wine/grape juice and bread on hand as there will be Communion.
The Virtual Annual Congregational Meeting is on the following Sunday, February 21, at noon. Tune in by Zoom to hear what’s been going on at HTLC, help plan its future, and vote on its council members, constitutional amendment, and budget. The five Wednesdays of Lent following Ash Wednesday we will be having Midweek Lenten Services live by Zoom at 6:30 p.m. in conjunction with the other local ELCA churches. As in past years, the churches will take turns hosting and performing dramatic readings. It will be a calming and meditative experience (we hope) with the oh-so-singable setting of Marty Haugen’s Holden Evening Prayer. I’ll send out the Zoom info later.
